U.S. Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeats 15-term incumbent in Colorado House primary (LINK) — 30 June 2026
— Guardian: Kiros's triumph came a week after New York voters unseated two Democratic congressional incumbents and replaced a third who was retiring with candidates who had campaigned on standing up to Israel amid accusations that it was carrying out a genocide in Gaza. Her success in the solidly Democratic 1st District all but ensures her election in November.
— Kiros, 29, was born in Ethiopia in 1997 [...] and graduated from law school at the University of Notre Dame in 2022. The following year, she wrote a blog post rejecting accusations that law students who protested Israel's counterattack after 7 October were antisemitic. The New York law firm where Kiros was working fired her after she refused to take the post down, and she then went into politics.

CNN: Trump's false and unproven claims about the Reflecting Pool (LINK) — 24 June 2026
— There has been no extended period since the pool was refilled in early June when it looked pristine. Algae was visible within days of the refilling, and it kept appearing even after the Trump administration declared that the water had been made "crystal clear".
— Trump said at a Monday event that after a two-year repair project under former President Barack Obama, the pool "never even opened"; he similarly said in a Monday post that the pool was "rarely open due to leaks and 'stench'" under Obama and former President Joe Biden. In reality, the pool reopened in August 2012 and has been open for the vast majority of the days since.
— Trump has also continued to exaggerate Obama's spending on the reflecting pool, saying at the Monday event that the two-year project cost "over $100 million". The contract was actually for about $35 million. The president has also repeatedly exaggerated the length of the reflecting pool: "almost-2,500-foot-long" and "taller than any building in the world, actually." It is 2,028 feet long, according to a page that was on the National Park Service website as of late May. The world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, is more than 2,700 feet tall.

— AlterNet: According to Futurism, the stock — which represents Trump's Truth Social social media platform — has been "circling the drain for over a year now." The DJT stock made its public debut in 2022 for just under $10 per share, and it was rapidly hyped up to its all-time high of just under $94.20 before dropping back into the low teens. Then in early 2024, it was relaunched after a merger, briefly shooting up to around $60. Since then it has lost nearly 90 percent of its value, and the decline shows no sign of slowing.

— In a May 27 Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump claimed that a task force headed by Vice President JD Vance, is "finding billions and billions and billions of dollars. And if he does really great we'll have a balanced budget without having to do anything." Later he said, "And I think we have a chance to save Social Security without doing anything to it, by just the numbers of fraudulent people on Social Security — people that are 115 years old, 125 years old, getting payments."
— There shouldn't be any such payments to anyone 115 or 125 years old because, since September 2015, the Social Security database has been set to automatically terminate benefits to individuals listed as 115 or older. And the most recent federal budget deficit was about 240% more than the highest federal estimate of annual spending due to fraud.
